Do you mean 1864 or 1968? Both were in Chicago and we were at war in both (Civil War and Vietnam). 1864 was McClellan (lost to Lincoln) and 1968 was Hubert Humphrey (lost to Nixon). The 1968 actually ended in violence, see my new post: http://www.american-presidents.org/2008/08/important-political-conventions.html.

You've got to click the link to see which one I meant... but you did catch the trick that I could have been talking about either, well done. And those are some interesting convention facts at the American Presidents blog, although I'd nominate RNC 1880.
I'll have to look into the RNC 1880...might warrant a post at the APB.:) Thanks for the comments!
